LESSON #5 :
ANXIETY/WORRY/FEAR
"When I am afraid, I will trust in you."
(Psalm 56:3)
Anxiety: an unpleasant state of mental uneasiness or concern
Worry: to feel mentally distressed, anxious, or uneasy
Fear: an anxious feeling caused by the presence of danger
Today's world appears dangerous and unpredictable-reports of wars, earthquakes, disease, poverty, divorce, abortion, and violent crimes, fill our news reports. As a result, people everywhere are feeling overwhelmed with anxiety, worry, and fear. They are afraid they will lose their jobs, their homes, their scholarships, their marriage, their retirement, and a million other things. However, despite the abundance of concerns in our lives, scriptures tell us that God does not want us to worry or be anxious about anything. In fact, the only thing we are to fear is God alone. The antidote for fear is faith, trust, and love of God.

SYNOPSIS

People who suffer from anxiety and worry tend to focus on the future. They imagine harmful events or catastrophes that may never occur. God's word tells us that we cannot discover anything about the future.1 We are to stay in the present and turn all our anxiety over to God because he cares for us.2 When we give our anxiety to God, He promises that He will sustain us and that He will never let the righteous man fall.3 We are to cope with today's problems, and not worry about what tomorrow may bring.4
In addition to living in the future, people who are anxious tend to "blow things up out of proportion," and worry about this or that little thing. God does not want us to fret about the small stuff.5 Instead, He wants us to focus on Him,6 and trust Him for all our needs-even for relatively "big" items like food and clothes.7 God is well aware that we need these things and promises He will provide.8
In the final analysis, God does not want us to be anxious about anything,9 whether in the present or in the future, and whether "big" or "small." When we are worried or afraid, He invites us to pray to Him and present our requests to Him. When we do so, He promises He will provide us with peace-peace that is beyond what we can ever understand or grasp.9

God's Guidance
God is a loving and powerful Father, who watches over all who love Him.10 He does not want his children to be fearful or afraid.11 He instructs us to believe in Him12 and to trust in Him,13,14 and He promises that He will watch over us and deliver us from all our fears.15 He is not a God far away, He is a God nearby.16
We do not need to fear natural disasters; God is more powerful than earthquakes and sunami's.17 And we do not need to fear what human beings can do to us as we walk on this earth.18 The worst thing a human being can do is to take our life (they cannot touch our souls).19 But God has infinitely more power; He can destroy your body and put your soul in hell.20 Therefore, the only thing we should properly fear is God alone-who has the power to send our bodies and souls into hell for eternity. This type of fear is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom.21
Finally, as Christians, we should stand firm in our faith and never fear giving our testimony and spreading the gospel.22 When we became Christians, God did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.23

Scriptures

A man cannot discover anything
about his future.
(Ecclesiastes 7:14)1
Cast all your anxiety on him
because he cares for you.
(1 Peter 5:7)2
Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you;
he will never let the righteous fall.
(Psalm 55:22)3
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
(Matthew 6:34)4
Do not fret-it leads only to evil.
(Psalm 37:8)5
"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken
away from her.
(Luke 10:41-42)6
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
(Luke 12:22-23)7
So do not worry, saying "What shall we eat?" or "What shall we drink?" or "What shall we wear?" For the pagans run after all
these things, and your heavenly father knows that you need them.
(Matthew 6:31-32)8
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4:6-7)9
The Lord watches over all who love him.
(Psalm 145:20)10
Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has
been pleased to give you the kingdom.
(Luke 12:32)11
Don't be afraid; just believe.
(Mark 5:36)12
When I am afraid, I will trust in you.
(Psalm 56:3)13
Surely God is my salvation; I will trust
and not be afraid.
(Isaiah 12:2)14
I sought the Lord, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
(Psalm 34:4)15
The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything.
(Philippians 4:5,6)16
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
(Psalm 46:2-3)17
Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever
trusts in the Lord is kept safe.
(Proverbs 29:25)18
I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill
the body and after that can do no more. But I will
show you whom you should fear: Fear him who,
after the killing of the body, has the power to
throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
(Luke 12:4-5)19
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot
kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who
can destroy both soul and body in hell.
(Matthew 10:28)20
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
(Proverbs 1:7)21
Stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the
faith of the gospel without being frightened in any
way by those who oppose you.
(Philippians 1:27-28)22
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit
of power, of love and of self-discipline.
(2 Timothy 1:7)23
